Listening to the Mother
12th Installation of 12
May 21, 2023- June 20, 2023
As I walk into the clearing I feel the excitement and nervous energy of being in progress with this last installation of this particular project.
Mother Nature
The 12th installation of the ‘Listening to the Mother’ project.
Site specific land art means that I have so many options for unusual materials to create my pieces. And
I have so many limits for materials I can envision would be amazing to bring the pieces in my head to life.
So I commune with the space. The site where I’m co creating with nature. Specifically.
I sometimes bring a few things from my garden or studio if they will decompose without any harm to the environment.
Yet while I delight and struggle with these limits, mostly I love this process.
It allows me to get out of my known experience and expectations and step into the bountiful world of what is possible in nature.
This was also the site of the first installation. It had fallen down and disassembled itself after a few months of winter, and had offered an abundance of both gathered materials and possibilities when I was scouting out sites for the last installation. This beautiful clearing with sun dappled misses and giant canopies almost shouted it’s need to become here.
The focus of design became the shapes and flows of infinite life while held by an elusive and nurturing figure that was more of the mysteries of the forest than concepts of Mother Nature. What emerged from fallen debris was a study if the circularity of abundance in nature.
We need to consider how much we, as only one part of nature, ignore, mistreat and consume these gifts. To be circular means perpetual forward movement. We must contribute to the preservation of this force and protect the circles of abundance that we are afforded.
